World of Warcraft has a patch coming out that will finally connect players from all realms to actually be able to play in instances and dungeons together. This is the first time that players from one server have been able to play in instances with other players from other servers.
How the game generally works is that when you create your player you create that character on a specific server. Although there are millions of players who play World of Warcraft, there are only a limited number on your specific server. There are quite a few problems that this causes.
First is that you find out your friends play that game but are on a different server. In this case you had to either start a whole new character to play with them or pay a $25 fee to transfer your character to their server to be able to play along with your friends. You are just too segmented to really enjoy playing with all the other players in the game.
The second problem was that on some servers the population was low. Players quit the game or moved to other servers leaving some servers feeling very empty. It's difficult to find someone to play with especially in the high level instances that require teamwork. At non peak playing times it was almost impossible to get a group together. When you link the servers together letting you play instances with each other, these low population servers aren't such a huge problem anymore.
This problem is now somewhat solved because even if on a low population server, you can enter into a queue to play the heroic instances. There are incentives to run these instances daily so there will be quite a few players to play with. This is a step in the right direction as waiting to play a game that you are paying for is just boring.
