Get More Out Of Your Workouts
If you workout without weights, or, if you do, you can effectively increase the intensity and the calorie burning effects by adding interval training to your workouts. This will add a greater degree of efficiency to your workout.
Interval training is when you add short bursts of relatively high intensity activity to your workout routine. This is easy to do on aerobic equipment and, naturally, to add to your workout without weights. However, if you are working out with weights, it's not advisable to do with free or heavy weight loads.
Research has shown that interval training is actually better for your health overall health than the typical 45-60 minute cardio sessions at the gym. And, it's relatively easy for anyone to adopt and work into their exercise routine. Just start slow and find a level you are comfortable with. Then, increase the intensity from their over time.
What Are Intervals?
An interval routine is where your low intensity movement is typically double the time or your high intensity activity. This is usually 60/30 seconds. Your goal is to increase the number of cycles that you are able to do.
For instance, a typical routine for someone working out outside would be the sprint/walk interval. This is where you sprint for 30 seconds and then walk for a minute. You repeat this cycle as many times as your fitness level will allow you to.
But, it doesn't always have to do with speed. Interval training is more about intensity. An example of this would be if you are using a treadmill, you can increase the grade on the machine rather than the speed that you are walking. By doing this, you naturally increase the intensity.
A More Natural Workout
Some proponents say that interval training is more natural that our usual ideas about our workouts. Real life is interval training all the time. We do hard work for a little bit and then we rest or slow down. Then it's back to hard work. Then rest. You see this with anyone doing yard work or other demanding work.
One of the best reasons to add interval training to your exercise routine is that it helps your muscles work better and more efficiently. All the muscles including the ones in your heart and arteries. This can help reduce or prevent other health problems like diabetes, heart disease and stroke.
Safely Add Intervals
So, to safely add interval training to your exercise routine, you just begin at the intensity that's right for you and increase from there. You don't have to add it to each workout or each movement. It's easier to start with the aerobic routines. Find a pattern that fits you and that gives you the best overall experience.
After you work this into your routine, you will find out a could of things. Number one, you will burn more calories in less time using intervals. Number two, you will significantly reduce the time required to get in a good workout without weights.
