Working in a room with the right atmosphere is crucial - especially if you are working at home. Even if you are just working in your pajamas or home clothes, you would still need to create a work-conducive ambiance to battle laziness. You need to be productive, that's why you need to set your workplace.

When establishing your workplace at home, consider the following things:

1. Place - Do you want your workplace to be in your bedroom, in the living room, or in a separate study room at home? Moving away from your bed, the TV and the kitchen could be a good idea because then you won't be tempted to sleep or to eat all day while you work. If you consider a part of your bedroom to be your workplace, then do away from your bed to avoid being sleepy. Having light-colored walls and an airy place lets you be more alive, rather than lulling you to sleep with a dimmed room.
2. Chair - Working at home has its drawbacks because you get to sit in front of your computer most of the time. Therefore, a chair is one of the first investments that you must make. Forget the desk - the chair is more important. Always remember that you have to be comfortable sitting on it for long periods of time. Test the chair before buying it, and decide if you'd be comfortable sitting on it for hours. If it makes your bottom hurt or numb, then by all means invest on another, better chair.
3. Laptop - Work-at-home jobs are usually freelancers: freelance writers, freelance web designers or freelance editors. A laptop (or a desktop, if you want) is a must. However, a laptop might be a better investment because you can move around the house and the city. If you think that you cannot work at home because of too many distractions, you can always drag your laptop to a coffee shop and work away. A laptop is the most important investment as a work-at-home person - even more important than that cozy chair.
4. Work alone - If you are a work-at-home mother, then why don't you get a babysitter sometimes? You can get some 'me' time, and get to finish all your works in one day without much distractions from your children. The same goes if you have pets like dogs or cats begging for your attention. Let them roam around the garden, and give yourself some time alone for a few hours - you'd be thankful for it.
5. Set the mood - So you have the workplace, but do you have that 'working mood?' Do everything for you to feel 'professional,' such as a coffee or some drinks by your side (to prevent you from returning to the kitchen) or some uplifting music in the background. Do this even if you are working at home. Close your door to prevent neighbors from visiting you, and work away once you get that mood.
