WRITING SUB-PANEL
The writing screen is where you set some of the basic options for writing your posts. The first line on this sub-panel is size of the post box.
SIZE OF THE POST BOX determines the size of the text edit box where you write your posts.
If we leave this at the default of ten and look at the POSTS >> ADD NEW SCREEN we will see the writing area at ten lines. If you change that to 20 and SAVE CHANGES and look at this same screen we will see that the box has increased to 20 lines.
Set this for what is best for you.
FORMATTING
Checking the top box tells WordPress to convert all of the emoticons in your posts into graphical smiles. You don't have to worry about loading these graphics to use them. These graphics were loaded in an images folder automatically when you installed WordPress
WordPress automatically converts text smileys to graphic images with this box checked. UN-checking it will tell WordPress to leave the emoticons as plain text.
If I add a emoticon to my post and view it I can see the graphic emoticon.
If I un-check this box and SAVE CHANGES then you see the plain text version as typed.
Checking the second box, WordPress will automatically check the post to make sure your post has valid XHTML code. Invalid XHTML code may cause problems in some browsers.
Initially you may want to leave this unchecked since some plug-ins you add later may not work with this box checked.
DEFAULT POST CATEGORY
There are two different sets of categories in WordPress - post categories (refereed to simply as categories) and link categories.
All posts use both the POST CATEGORY and the LINK CATEGORY to help organize the posts for display on the site
If you do not assign a post category then it will be placed in the category that is selected here as the default. You can change this later if you want.
Since we have not created any categories then we only have the UNCATEGORIZED selection. As you add categories you can change this as needed.
DEFAULT LINK CATEGORY Links are externals links to others sites from your site. WordPress initially set-ups up a LINK CATEGORY called BLOGROLL as a default which contains 7 links to various WordPress sites.
If you use the LINKS WIDGET on your site, then when you visit your site you can see the BLOGROLL and the various links. You manage these links from the LINKS sub-panel in the top navigation panel.
The default is set to the BLOGROLL. You can change this as need as you add link categories.
PRESS THIS is an application that runs in your browser that allows you to take information directly from a web page for writing a post. You can publish the post directly to your site using this application.
Drag-and-drop the link in your bookmarks and it will create a shortcut for easy use.
POST VIA E-MAIL is a completely optional function. With this option, you can set up your site to publish e-mails as posts. It requires a separate dedicated e-mail address used specifically for this purpose. If you use this options then any e-mail from this account will be posted to your site. So this e-mail information should be kept very secure. WordPress will suggest three random strings to use as passwords if you use this option.
For now, you can just leave these setting as there are.
REMOTE PUBLISHING
The next two boxes enable the ATOM PUBLISHING PROTOCOL or one of the XML-RPC PROTOCOL publishing applications for posting directly from a desktop client or remote website.
These are off by default and should remain off unless you are using an application that requires these protocols, such as, the Firefox plug-in ScribeFire. ScribeFire requires the XML-RPC PROTOCOL box to be checked.
UPDATE SERVICES Ping-O-Matic is one of the update services that WordPress uses to notify different search engines that your site has been updated. This is done when you make a change or add a post to your site.
In order to use this function you need to set the PRIVACY SETTINGS below to allow search engines.
There is also a line at the top of the ADMIN page that gives you the status of your PRIVACY SETTINGS.
When the PRIVACY SETTINGS are set to allow search engines then you are given the options of adding additional ping services in addition to PING-O-Matic.
There are several services you may consider on the website.
Click on the link at the bottom of the WRITING page to find a list of PING SERVICES to add to your list.
REMEMBER whenever you make a change you must click on SAVE CHANGES for them to be saved otherwise they are gone and you will need to re-enter any updates.
