Wood stove pipes are basically long cylindrical metal tube that is used to release smoke particles. When it comes to buying a wood stove pipe, it is important to make sure you opt for the best one. For this, you need to determine your needs. But, there are two types of wood stove pipes - vent free and venting - and both of them work in a specific way. Also, wood stove pipes are now available with different features such as bun and plate warmer additions, porcelain and metal facings, CO2 monitors and temperature gauges. Just determine your needs first and then opt for any one of them.
After buying a pipe, it is time now to install it. That's where following 8-step guide will help you big time.
Maintain a right distance. This is the first thing to consider, as people often neglect it and don't install a pipe at least 36 inches away from the wall. After this, a hole according to the diameter of your wood stove is to be drilled on your wall.
Using chimney liners is important. If you don't want to go through the hassle of dealing with smoke and heat problems, you should make sure you don't let these pipes pass through ceilings, closets, or outside a building, without chimney liners.
Don't use them outside. Many people place these wood pipes out of a window, but that's not the right thing to do, as it gives rise to rapid creosote build-up which is mainly due to the fact that these pope take less time to cool as compared to a prefabricated metal chimney.
Keep distance from flammable material. It is obvious that you need to keep flammable material away from your stove as it can create fire risk. Conducting a test to know about the reaction of these combustive materials is a good option.
Protect from heat. Another important point is to create a 3 1/2 inch brick wall close to the edges of your wall, as it prevents heat damage.
Distance between outside chimney cap and exterior wall. Make sure this distance is no less than 9 inches and you are installing factory made pipes.
Prevent air leakage: Another important thing is to use steel connector sleeve for final connections so that you don't face any issue related to air leakage.
Regular maintenance. After you are done installing your wood stove pipes, you should still be checking them to see if some maintenance is required.
