Wired or Wireless Home Security

Home security is one of the foremost things on any homeowner's mind. Anyone can fall prey to home invasions, theft, burglaries, and all other sorts of things that can cause any homeowner many a sleepless night. Gone are the days of not enjoying our vacation to the fullest because we spent the whole time wondering if we locked the door properly or not. Thanks to the technology that allows us to protect ourselves, our properties, and our loved ones from harm, we can now sleep comfortably at night knowing that we may be asleep, but our home protection system is wide awake and ever ready to protect us and the things we love 24 hours a day.

The first question that any homeowner faces when choosing a security system is this: wired or wireless? Wire systems differ from wireless systems in various ways, although both have their strong and weak points.

Wired home security systems are easy to install since they only require basic electrical wiring for the control panel, keyboard, the sensors motion detectors and cameras. You can do the installation yourself if you know the basics of electronic wiring, or you can have a professional do the installation, since they have the skills to make the system as inconspicuous as possible. Wired systems are usually concealed under floorboards, rugs, and in walls. They are also less susceptible to false alarms compared to wireless systems. A good time to install a hard-wired system is when you are remodeling a part or the whole house, although you need a professional to integrate the system into your house's wiring. More and more homes now come with hard-wired security systems pre-installed because they require less monitoring and maintenance compared to wireless models.

It is commonly thought that wireless systems are more prone to the effects of aberrant radio frequencies, and thus more prone to give you false alarms. Most wireless systems only work within a certain range of distance and they are also more expensive, especially since the lithium batteries need regular monitoring to ensure that the system is working perfectly. Wireless systems use radio transmitters to send signals between the control panel, sensors, and cameras. They are much easier to install than the wired systems, although a major consideration is that other electronic signals from other appliances may cause interference with the signals sent by the system, so it should be installed from a safe distance from other electronic equipment. Wireless systems are great if you do not want to make great structural changes in your home or its wiring. A professional can install them, but the average homeowner can perform the installation as well.

Whatever system you choose to go with, you can further enhance your security by adding other security options like strobes, sirens, and automatic emergency dialers when home security is threatened. With all these security measures you can rest on the confidence that you, your family, and your possessions are safe and secure.
