Winning World of Warcraft Battlegrounds - AB, WSG, and AV

Normally I write about ways to make more gold playing World of Warcraft, but in this article I wanted to focus a bit on winning battlegrounds. Why? Because PVP is an easy way to get some high level gear, and anything you don't have to buy saves you gold in the long run.

In case I don't repeat this for each battleground, the main ingredients to winning battlegrounds is healing, communication, and working in efficient sized groups (the lone ranger player rarely accomplishes anything).

Here are some tips for each of the old world battlegrounds.

Arathi Basin
The goal in Arathi Basin is simple: control more bases than your opponent for the longest amount of time. The best way to do that is to communicate with your teammates on where they should be and where your opponent is.

You want to move in packs, which means more than one, but you don't want everyone to be at the same place at the same time. You want to plan it so you outnumber your opponent by one or two players when you engage them. So if your opponent has three people defending a base, you want to show up with four or five players. This also means you might have to make some sacrifices somewhere else on the map. If six opponents are facing off against two of your defenders, you might have to let those defenders lose in order to maintain an advantage on the rest of the battlefield.

Leave two or three players to defend each base that you own. Less, and it won't intimidate your opponent from attacking. More, and you are wasting players on defense.

Keep moving and throwing your opponent off. Don't just cap three bases and try to defend them. Continue to put pressure on your opponent to keep them on defense so they can't get organized and come after one of your bases.

If you see a large group of seven or more opponents in one spots, don't try to out number them. Pick a base that they aren't defending and go there. If you're defending a base by yourself and seven opponents are charging in, don't yell for help. Do your team a favor and tell them to look for other bases that are going to be open. Try to keep your opponent distracted for as long as you can while your teammates make advances on easier parts of the map.

Lastly, whoever has the Blacksmith has a big advantage for defending the rest of the bases, so hold it whenever you can.

Alterac Valley
There are two ways to win here: reduce your opponents reinforcements to zero, or defeat their general. I don't think anyone purposely tries to win by reinforcements because it's slow; it just happens that way when one side decides to create a "turtle", which means playing defensively rather than offensively. So, I will assume your goal is to defeat their general.

If everything goes smoothly, a few things will happen. First, your team will successfully cap and destroy the enemy's four towers. This will weaken their general's defenses. Second, you will capture the graveyard at the opponent's general; either First Aid Station or Frostwolf Graveyard. Lastly, you will get the majority of your teams players in the building with the opposing general and defeat him.

To do all that, you need to successfully defend the towers you cap from being taken back. Everyone likes to be rush ahead and hang out with at the general's building, but playing defense in the towers is an important part of setting yourself up for an easy victory.

Ideally, four or five players will defend each tower.

It's also a good idea to send five or six players back to recap the towers your opponent took from you. If losing towers is bad for you, it's also bad for them, so do what you can to make that happen. Talk to your teammates to assign players this task.

That leaves about half of your players with the task of rushing the opponent's camp to take their graveyard. On a good day, your opponent will be out rushing your base and you'll be to take theirs without too much of a fight. Those 20 or players can defend the graveyard and the last two towers until all the towers finish burning and it's time to start the fight on the general.

If you successfully recapped some of your own towers, that should give your team the advantage of taking down the general first.

If one team decides to play defense, the best option is to group up and move around them. Make their defense ineffective. Go back to the offensive plan. Otherwise, it's a long match and everyone is grumpy no matter who wins it.

Warsong Gulch
I saved this one for last because this has to be my least favorite battleground. I get frustrated at stalemates where both sides have or don't have the flag, and the lack of progress toward completely the match, which makes me give up. I thought the timer would help when it was added, but the matches still feel too long.

But hey, sometimes I'm there and it's a good idea to have a plan.

So here's your plan: take your fight to the flags and not the middle of the battle field. All too often you see players battling it at in the center or at the graveyards while the flags are at the opposites ends of the map, just waiting for players to show up and rescue them.

Four on defense and six on offense is a good balance to maintain. When you are working on defense, it's pretty easy to keep all of your defensive players in the same area. On offense, it's easy to get split up. When that happens, give everyone a chance to regroup and strike as a team. If you are sending in waves or two or three players to capture a flag that is being defended, you will never get it. So work together. Hopefully, if you do that, you'll at least keep things moving and finish the round quickly. Unfortunately it doesn't go that smoothly very often.
