Wine Storage - The Effects of Humidity on Wine

Expert Author C. J. Harrison

Wine can be one of the most difficult things to store correctly. Wine has always had very distinct ways to be stored, because of this a lot of misinformation has been published, with various people saying they found a better way, but really they are only damaging the wine. But the one thing everyone can agree on is how humidity can affect wine.

Wine is a difficult thing to have stored right because fine wine takes a long time to mature, years if not decades for some. But with most things taking this long, we need to look back to the basics on how the people before have done it. This can help us understand why we use wine cellars in the first place. Cellars are held at a specific temperature, in a dark, rather damp place. This is an important aspect of wine holding. While you will find plenty of warehouses that do not follow these steps, it's more of a political and business related reason than what the wine makers actually want them to do.

Humidity is important because of the cork used to seal the bottle. This cork needs humidity to keep its ability to not allow the wine to leak, or contaminants to leak in the wine. However to humid can create more problems because it ruins the labels on bottles and even the cork can be damaged if it to humid.

While there is quite a bit of variation in humidity, both cases of cork failure only happen at the far right and left spectrums of the humidity levels. While its hard to say what levels the humidity will affect the cork, you can be certain when you taste wine that has had cork failure, it will not be as tasty as it could have been.
