Advances in modern technology has allowed faux wood blinds to not only last longer than wood blinds, but now they look just as good. While wood slats can be considered an investment, in many situations, faux wood blinds will be a better home improvement.
The prime reason faux wood shades exist is because the synthetic materials that they are made of are cheaper to produce. These synthetic materials are more durable than wood, especially in water. They will not suffer as much damage from children or pets, both in terms of actual damage and total cost. While regular wood window treatments require chopping down hardwood trees that are decades old.
In places of high moisture, synthetic blinds are always a better choice. Outside, in showers and kitchens or anywhere your window covering will be exposed to steam, synthetic faux wood shades will resist warping and chipping. Their resistance to the elements also makes faux wood blinds easier to clean. Plastic also resists dust better than wood varnishes. So these fake blinds are good for areas with lots of dirt in the air.
For interior applications, there are a few areas where wood venetian blinds excel. The natural wood grain is hard to replicate, and the stains and finishes really showcase this difference. Hardwoods are lighter than plastic, so the blinds will be thinner and easier to raise and lower. However, for exterior treatments, wooden blinds just do not last long enough to be cost effective.
If you really want to use wood outside, your only real alternative for a cheap window covering is woven wood blinds. These are made of thin wood strips that let light in while still providing some privacy. They do not have adjustable venetian blind louvers however.
