There are many different web site tools that allow you to add social features to any website. Many webmasters stay away from these tools because they feel that they do not really add any true value to their site and may actually detract from the main focus of the domain or website. I think that this is horse feathers. Using social plugins and site add-ons only gives your site more appeal to a larger crowd and encourages visitor interaction which in many cases makes you site much more "sticky" which is what keeps you visitors coming back for more!
What Type Of Websites Can Benefit From Social Add-Ons?
If you run a website even if it is a commercial based website, you want all of your visitors to feel like home when they come visit. I can't tell you how many times I have found a product or service online and thought "Wow if these guys just had a open comment section or a forum where I could tell everybody about how great their stuff is, I would be bragging for days". But you know what, these sites all lost out on some great free press, because they thought that keeping their site simple was the way to go.
Now if you have an informational site, there is all the more reason to add social features. First of all, people love sharing information and they love discussing and sharing new ideas that may actually add value to the information you already have on your site. So it seems to me that no matter what the focus of your site is, you can only improve on your site by adding features that allow members to interact the way they want.
Problems With Social Website Plugins and Add-Ons
Can you get some idiots on your site that flame threads and say stupid stuff? Well yes, but this is a very small portion of those who like to interact on websites, there is always a joker in the crowd, but they will be shunned by the community in most every case and these problems tend to work themselves out through time.
There are very few reasons not to use these free website tools to add a great community feature to any website. If you are not sure about them, I highly suggest you at least give one a try and see what happens. If you have an active website I honestly believe you will be pleasantly surprised with the end result and I think your visitors will love it!

You can find many great social plugins by simply searching on Google. However, if you are searching for specific social network extensions many times you can find these type of plugins on the sites themselves. Twitter for example has all sorts of information about how to integrate different Twitter aspects into your own site and other large social networks have similar info on their own web pages.
