Texas forms part of the Southern United States. Due to the region's unique cultural and historic heritage, the American South has witnessed and influenced numerous political issues faced by the United States as a whole, including state's rights, slavery, the American Civil War and the American Civil Rights Movement. The region has not only given birth to several political movements (like George C. Wallace' American Independence Party) but also contributed many President's to the United States.
The historical significance of a number of such contributions from this region underlines its importance in the political arena. Texan Democrats have been at the forefront of the civil rights movement. To quote well-known Texas Democrat, Congresswoman Barbara Jordan who served in the United States House of Representatives from 1973-1979, "We believe in equality for all and privileges for none. This is a belief that each American regardless of background has equal standing in the public forum, all of us. Because we believe this idea so firmly, we are inclusive rather than an exclusive party. Let everybody come." - Congresswoman Barbara Jordan All Texan Democrats adhere to the following principles of human rights :
- To provide equal opportunity to all and ensure a level playing field.
- To guarantee equal protection before the law.
- To provide for and enforce full protection of civil and human rights.
- To guarantee non-interference in the private life and personal decisions of people as long as they are within the scope of law.
- To guarantee freedom of religion.
- To protect against all forms of discriminations and sexual harassment.
- To assure confidentiality and privacy of all personal records, irrespective of media of storage (like paper, electronics records, etc.)
- To protect and enforce all state and federal disability rights and laws, particularly the Americans with Disability Act.
- To provide full access to governmental records and information on matters of public interest.
- To repeal provisions of the Patriot Act which are incompatible with the Bill of Rights.
- To ensure all legal formalities are fulfilled before infringing on personal freedom, for instance, when needing surveillance, wire-tapping, etc.
- To adopt a constitutional amendment to provide all eligible voters an absolute right to vote in all public elections.
- To guarantee open access to the court system as guaranteed by the Texas constitution.
- To provide affordable and efficient access to justice for all Texans.
- To nominate and appoint qualified competent persons where required.
Texan Democrats exploit every platform available to them to spread this message of equality to all Texans.
