Here's the situation: People are making music. Others are downloading it... For free. We all know this, and if you're not a musician yourself you probably don't mind. But the thing is this; these musicians you like so much are also human. Not only are they losing out on money recording songs (Intended to make you happy, may I add), but they also don't make very many sales. Which in itself can be very demotivating. So how much longer can musicians go on making music that less and less people are willing to buy?
Being around the music industry a lot, I've seen many musicians come and go. Everyone wants to get into the game to make money from something they enjoy doing, but a lot of people leave it after demotivating results. During recent years people are giving up on their music careers increasingly rapidly, which is no surprise with the current downloading situation.
While it still is possible to make a lucrative career for yourself with music, for the average musician with no business knowledge it's an almost impossible task. Music business knowledge will give you a much greater chance of succeeding, so anyone that's not will to market, perform and sell their own music hasn't got much chance.
I personally don't think downloads will ever stop people making music, but there will be a lot less musicians and the shape of the music industry will change. It has to, musicians will stand up for themselves. After all, would you work for free?
