Many times whenever people get pulled over and the officer is approaching the car, they are thinking of what good excuse might get them out of a ticket. If they can just explain a story well enough to the officer, then they might just get a warning instead of a ticket. Unfortunately, many times speeding ticket excuses don't actually help at all. In fact they can hurt you.
There are some valid excuses. These will be different from state to state. If you are rushing someone to the hospital, for example like a pregnant women, generally speaking you aren't going to get a ticket. Some states allow you to speed if you are passing a car on a two lane highway. You may have just passed the car and are slowing back down when the officer clocked your speed. That would be a decent excuse since it's allowed by law in certain jurisdictions. Otherwise excuses don't help.
Officers who regularly pull people over have heard all sorts of excuses. They are pretty good at knowing which ones seems pretty valid and which ones don't. One of the biggest indicators as to whether you are telling a legitimate story is your driving record. If they see that you have had all sorts of traffic violations, they aren't going to believe a word you say. If you have had a perfect driving record, they may be more understanding since you don't have a history of doing anything wrong on the road.
The biggest problem with a speeding excuse is that it's an admittance to guilt. You are telling the officer why you are breaking the law. If you ever want to take the speeding ticket to court, you are going to lose based on the fact that you admitted to speeding. Your words can be used against you in court. It's best not to admit to guilt even if it's an excuse. This will help you fight your speeding tickets in court much more easily.
