Why You Need to Have an Effective Keyword List

Expert Author Renee Shupe

The success of your website often depends on how much importance you put on Search Engine Optimization. Planning and just the right execution of the best and most appropriate keywords to improve your ranking and to help effectively capture the attention of your specific target market.

Getting that list of the perfect keywords takes time, don't take this step lightly and it's often a process overlooked or not taken seriously by website owners. In fact, this step can be made difficult if you choose. Yes, just about anyone can come up with a list of key words related to your business, but not everyone knows exactly what your customer is seeking.

Try and put yourself in the shoes of your clients, think like them. Don't try to sell them, think more about how they feel and what they are looking for. Stay away form industry buzzwords because your clients or customer may not know the term. Keep the terms focused on familiar terms like group, rather than "niche", sale rather than "conversion".

This is where the tricky part comes, figuring out a list of keywords that not only apply to your business but will actually work. You might start with a list of 100 words, but to become really focused and see results you'll need to narrow it down. Take some time to look at competitor's websites to get a feel for the keywords they are focusing on. Then take some time to see how you might be able to improve on them and even top them.

You don't have to limit yourself to a single keyword either, Search Engine Optimization will also recognize multi-word phrases. Here's an example, if you are in the telecommunications business you would optimize for words like "calling", "telephone" or "wireless", but you could also focus on keyword phrases like "call center" or "wireless communication".

Since SEO has become a standard practice in your online business opportunities there are many useful tools available to help you develop your most effective and easy to rank keywords as possible. Google, in particular offers a tool that lets you research how often keywords searched. Try and avoid any keywords that are impossible to top.

For example, a very broad word like "wireless network" is searched over 4.1 Million times globally (according to Good AdWords keyword tool). Since it comes up so often the chances of you being able to get your page on even the first few pages of a search engine are nearly impossible. On the other hand though a phrase like "wireless internet service" is only searched 90,500 times per month, this makes it easier to get a higher ranking spot. So if you are selling a product or service in the wireless industry you will want to optimize for phrases and keywords that are searched often but not so often you lose the ability to be found.
