Why Social Bookmarking is Important to Your Business Or What Can Social Bookmarking Do For You?

Expert Author Colleen Soehnlein

I recently attended a webinar hosted by Shelby Larson and Keith Thompson of Content Divas. Before this webinar I can honestly say that I knew the word "Social Bookmarking" but I really didn't understand the concept or more importantly the value that social bookmarking can provide to your business. Social Bookmarking is especially important if you are trying to grow your internet presence organically. Doesn't that sound a bit like farming? Anyhow, what I hope to share with you in this short article is the basic concepts I learned during this training session and have put in to use in my own business. So, let's get to it.

First, to understand why a Social Bookmark is important you have to understand three basic fundamentals to the social bookmarking genre. These are backlinks, anchor text, and page rank. Backlinks are incoming links to your website or web page. Anchor text is the link label that is visible, clickable text in a hyperlink. The words contained in the anchor text can determine the ranking the page will receive by the search engines. Lastly, page rank reflects the search engines view of the importance of the web page.

Hope I didn't lose you there. Now to the nitty-gritty.

A bookmark ("favorite" or "internet shortcut") is how a user saves the URL of a site they would like to easily return to later. For example, you searched for a recipe. You found one you like, in fact you like the site and would like to return and use it again. You simply bookmarked that site. We've all done it. The bookmark function is available on all of the popular web browsers. It's easy to use and it saves us time.

Now, let's take this a step further. A Social Bookmark is a way for people to share, organize, and search bookmarks. A social bookmark is saved to a bookmarking website rather than your PC. These bookmarks can be shared from any computer, and shared any where in the world. What makes social bookmarking special - the big difference - is that these bookmarks are public. People use the social bookmarking site to see what is popular. What are the hot web pages. The more popular a bookmark is the more visibility the bookmark has on the bookmarking site.

Social bookmarking is frequently used by Internet Marketers as one technique to enhance their search engine rankings. Every time a bookmark is created it generates a backlink to the webpage that is being bookmarked. The bookmark title is commonly used as anchor text. What this is doing is telling the search engine what the webpage is about and the more people that bookmark or "vote" for the same webpage makes for more backlinks. This increases the probability that that URL will be featured on the "popular bookmarks" page.

Why is all of this important? Bottom line is when you are marketing on the internet you need to be high or highest in the search engine ranking so your site will be seen by people searching for your product or service. After all isn't that what it is all about... Getting your product or message to people looking for your product or message?

I hope you see how these things are connected and I hope you see what this can mean to your site and your business.
