Why Low Glycemic Diet Foods Are Important For Diabetics

Many people have heard of low glycemic diet foods but do not understand what they are or why they are important. It is true that they can aid in losing weight more effectively than other types of foods but what is more important is the way that they can help a diabetic maintain their blood sugar levels with much less use of medications. Its fine to say that, as a diabetic, you should be eating low glycemic diet foods but until you learn what they are and what to replace with these foods, that recommendation will be a hard one to follow.

Whenever we eat food or drink beverages our blood sugar levels change. When we eat some foods our blood sugar levels will rise sharply. For most of us, this is not a problem but if you are diabetic, this may be disastrous. In a person who does not have diabetes, the body simply produces enough insulin to bring blood sugar levels under control. If a person does not produce insulin or their body is resistant to the insulin that is produced, blood sugar levels can rise to dangerous levels.

When we hear about low glycemic diet foods we are hearing about foods that have the following effects: they do not raise the level of blood sugar drastically when they are eaten, they can lower blood lipids and they are also able to help a person's body be more receptive to the insulin that is produced. Because of this, foods that are considered to be part of a low glycemic diet are good choices for a diabetic patient to consume.

There are many different foods that can be included in a low glycemic diet. These foods are considered to rate a 50 or lower on the Glycemic Index. This number refers to the speed with which a carbohydrate will raise the blood sugar after it has been eaten. Many vegetables are on this list along with fruits such as grapefruits, peaches, cherries and plums.

Some foods may be higher in natural sugar and carbohydrates but because they are also higher in fiber they are considered to have a lower position on the glycemic index. Therefore, a low glycemic diet should also include whole grains that can help offset the rise in blood sugar that some foods will cause.

Protecting your health is important and learning all you can about your diet and how it will influence your health is a great first step.
