Why Learn the Professional Swing Sequence? Lower Your Handicap Without Swing Changes

Expert Author Mark H Wright

Developing your Professional Swing Sequence.

Quite often called a pre-shot routine but really it is not about the pre shot. It is a sequence of mind and body steps that you want to take before, during and after each shot in order to maximise your potential to swing your best, most often, in any given round of golf. And by the way I called this the pre shot routine for years and have just recently changed my thinking and terminology so you may well see older programs or articles of mine which talk about the preshot routine, but from now on please think of it as a Professional Swing Sequence.

Why is it called a Professional Swing Sequence?

I call it this because professionals are seriously committed to going through very deliberate sequences of thinking and setting up for each shot as they have learnt the power behind it. In my opinion your game is no less important to you than the professionals is to them. You still want to play the best you can, whip your buddies and have a lot of fun out on the golf course right? Exactly and that is why you deserve to learn and use the same sequences or rituals as the best so you can get the best out of yourself and the game.

Why develop this ritualistic act called the Professional Swing Sequence?

You are not developing this ritual to help you practice better, although you will if you only ever practice using your professional shot sequence. You are not really developing this habitual sequence to help you play better in those friendly rounds of golf but you will play much better if you do. You know those times when you are under pressure and the mind is racing, thinking of things that may go wrong, praying that you can just hit the fairway on the 18th? Then when you hit the fairway you just want to get it on the green, anywhere! And then when it is on the green you are just praying that you do not three putt. Then you have anxieties when the ball is 3 foot short of the hole and you are under real pressure to knock the tiny putt in and finish off the game.

You are developing the Professional Shot Sequence so that you have a reliable and comforting sequence of actions and thoughts that you can employ to help keep you calm and properly focussed on the job at hand. You are developing this sequence so that you have a familiar friend to help keep your mind quiet, the body relaxed but ready and you can confidently hit the shot you want. It works because the human mind likes the familiar and the well practiced habit. You will find that you can relax more and "just get on with it".

You are developing this sequence for Pressure Situations more than anything else but there are also some other benefits to following a sequence and staying calm under pressure.

You may want to seriously adopt this ritualistic, habitual sequence for every shot you take because you will save yourself shots around the golf course. You will play better, hit more great shots and really get to enjoy that feeling when you have hit one out the middle more and as a side effect of hitting more good and great shots you are going to have more fun and probably win more often.

You know that feeling that runs through your body when you absolutely scream one out of the middle of the clubface and it (the ball) does exactly what you wanted? It's a great feeling isn't it? And we all know that you can be having a mediocre round but when you button one beautifully then all the other shots are forgotten and it makes it all worthwhile. Imagine that great feeling for a minute and think how many times you get to experience and enjoy it in a round of golf. Would you like to experience it twice as much, maybe even three times more? Would you even like the quality of your not so good shots to improve as an added bonus?

Improve your bad shots (everyone has them remember) and hit more great shots that just make you feel powerful and proud, get better results, knock shots off your handicap and whip your buddies more often. If that is not enough reason to learn and use the Professional Shot Sequence then I am not sure I can convince you that it is truly worthwhile and valuable to any level of golfer. Fact and guaranteed.

Learning a solid Professional Swing Sequence will take some time with experiment and feedback to determine the best sequence for you but there are very specific "must have" aspects so please make sure you work with a knowledgeable professional who can advise you on both the physical and Mental Game aspects of the Sequence which are fundamental to success.
