Buying cutlery is an important decision, and you should always make sure that you buy the best quality you can afford. The reasoning behind this is simple: cutlery which is good quality and well cared for will give you many years of excellent service, and even last as long as you.
To ensure that you can give it the care that it warrants though, when you go to buy cutlery you need to consider where you will keep it. It may be that you are not as bothered about your day to day cutlery at home, and so a drawer tidy with compartments for knives, forks, spoons and so on is all that is needed. This has the potential to mean the pieces scratch or damage each other though, especially over time if consistently kept this way.
This is definitely not an ideal situation though, and it is better to invest in some proper storage for your cutlery in order to maintain it well. Even a basic every day set can last a very long time if stored well. This can, of course, happen anyway, but the surface of the pieces will show their poor storage arrangements, even if they are still fully usable.
Good quality sets often come with their own storage boxes and containers. The best of these will have slots for each piece, meaning they do not come into contact with one another whilst put away. It is worth looking for a set that comes with one of these included in the original price, as you will need to invest anyway to keep cutlery good quality in the long run.
It is important to look for the lining of any storage container or cabinet, as this can affect the pieces. Suede, velvet or any softer materials are the best to look out for. Even felt, if thick, can do just as good a job. It is important you check and patch up the lining regularly too, as any damage to it can mean that your cutlery is not getting the best storage possible inside its cabinet.
If you can afford to, then go for a high end cabinet that is made of wood (this can be matched to your dining suite, which means it will look good even if kept out in the dining room) and has separate drawers within it. The knives would be well spaced out on one layer for example, then the forks on another, and so on. The separate drawers, which will be able to come out of the general cabinet, are also a good idea when it comes to laying the table, as you can easily circle the table placing each item down as you go, then moving on to the next type of cutlery.

Make sure that each time you put your cutlery away it is clean, dry and polished (stainless steel does not always need to be polished, but silver should be); that way it should stay in near perfect condition and be ready for use immediately when you next need it. By keeping it in a cabinet, you will be making sure your cutlery is valued as it should be, and stays an excellent set for many years to come that you can be proud to use.
