What is the one piece of advice people may hear when embarking on a weight loss diet? It's journaling or keeping a diet diary. Why is this important to utilize when you're on a weight loss diet? Most people are completely unaware of how many calories you consume in any given day. If you kept a diary for one of your "normal" or overindulgent days (maybe that is your normal everyday), you might be completely blown away with how much you are really eating.
One reason I think Americans tend to overeat is because we have become a society of the "supersize" mentality. You get more (supposedly) for your buck. And, more is better, right? Quite honestly, if we only partook in a supersized meal once in a while, that would be okay but people like fast, convenient, good junk food. Not only that but did you know that fast food burgers and fries are quite addicting? It's true. The fast food industry is about high fat, high salt and high sugar that tells your body to eat more of the same.
The solution is the weight loss journal. If you see it in writing, perhaps you won't go for the super fries and a shake next time or maybe you won't go through the drive through at all. You will begin to choose healthier options that are lower in fat and calories. In other words, you'll stay in control of what goes in your mouth. I personally don't feel it necessary to chart every calorie you put in your mouth but on rare occasions, I will note if I've had a particularly "hearty" meal.
There's something else that should go into your journal. Because dieting for weight loss tends to bring up a lot of emotional connections with food, your moods throughout the day should be noted at meals and in between. You learn very quickly what your food triggers are based on your particular moods. It also helps you to determine if what you're feeling in between meals is hunger, stress, or perhaps just thirsty. Your body doesn't know the difference between any of those things so you need to determine if there is a pattern that you've been ignoring and have just assumed you were always hungry for no reason.
