Why Don't You Promote Your Website?

Nowadays it's no surprise if you have your own website or blog. The internet has given everyone a chance to create their own virtual store front or virtual pedestal.

It's also no surprise that many are looking into monetizing their sites. Many do so by either creating a product or service that they can sell through their site (such as an ebook or video tutorial series) or promote a merchant's product and get commissions as an affiliate marketer.

The thing is, regardless of where your store front is - be it the real world or the virtual world, it's going to need traffic if you expect to make any money out of it. Without traffic you will not get potential customers that will buy whatever it is your offering or promoting.

Many simply let the search engines do all the work for them. Search engines typically index and rank websites based on their value - according to the search engine's ranking algorithms.

Good quality content is one factor they look at, along with keywords and back links. Even having these combination doesn't necessarily assure you of a ranking.

Why? Simply because there are a lot of websites competing for the same thing. There are only 10 slots in the search engine results first page; there are thousand of sites competing for those 10 slots; you do the math.

That's why in addition to search engines you need to also do some promotion in order to get your name out there. Let's use an example from the real world - even if you're business is in the yellow pages you would still advertise in billboards, newspapers, radio and even cable television right?

Of course you do. This is so people will see you and remember you. Well the same theory works online. Just because you're indexed doesn't mean you'll be seen. You have to make yourself be seen.

There are a couple of ways you can go about it.

  1. Article marketing is perhaps the most used and is the mainstay of any online marketing strategy. Building credibility and trust is the goal of this promotional tactic. By building yourself up as an expert in whatever niche market you're into you can build a loyal following of potential customers that will be open to your suggestions.
  2. The newest and perhaps hottest method is through the use of social media - Facebook and Twitter to name a few. The impact of these types of promotion is incredible since more and more people have made social media an integral part of their daily lives.
  3. Classified ads. Believe it or not there are classified ads online - similar to the classified ads you see in the newspaper. Many are free and are even broken down by geographic location for a more specific exposure.
  4. Reviews. As it suggests, have other people write reviews of your site or the products and services you're offering or promoting. Many will do it for free if they feel many will benefit from what you have. You get exposure in return especially if the person doing your review is a well known personality online with a lot of followers.
  5. Video marketing. YouTube comes to mind. I'm sure you have watched videos in YouTube and thought to yourself you can do it too. With YouTube anyone can have their own online television channel and if you love watching those infomercial at midnight you can get the same thing in YouTube and other similar video websites. Do a good job and your video can become viral - like that video of the laughing baby or the cat that loved jumping into boxes no matter how small.

By promoting your site you let people know that you're there and that you can give them what it is they are looking for - solutions to their problems.

The more people see your advertising the more chances they will visit you increasing the potential of a sale. in the end that what matters.
