Why Do Some Treat Parapsychology As a Science?

Parapsychology is considered to be a part of science by its practitioners. But those from the main-stream think otherwise since the methodology does not involve stepwise scientific procedures.

The first step of being part of science is the acceptance of Parapsychological Association as an affiliated body of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and Ongoing Research Work. Many universities offer courses and doctorate programs in this stream.

Journals publish papers related to this study.

Still, the importance given to this research is far from that given to mainstream science. Work in parapsychology does not get funded easily. The factors on which this study is based are unknown and do not comply with the laws that govern the way the universe works. Parapsychology is supposed to stem from the concept of 'reality'. Rather, it seems closer to spiritualism which is based on blind faith and belief.

Some reasons for not accepting theories of parapsychology are:

• Events that have to happen in the future can not affect the present.
• Mental power can not affect anything in the materialistic world without the assistance of a force or physical energy.
• No one can read a person's mind without tools like speech or behavior.
• Knowledge from a point in space can be obtained only when it can be sensed or energy is transmitted.
• An individual's personality is based on their mental makeup and not on influence by stars or celestial bodies.

To establish parapsychology and accept the underlying ideas, evidence that can over-ride what we understand presently as true needs to be put forth.
