Why Do Children Need Positive Role Models?

Expert Author Charity Edergton

Children need positive role models. Unfortunately, many of them look to entertainers to fill that role. How many times have you heard an entertainer say they don't want to be a positive influence? They might not want the job, but they have it anyway.

Do you want your child emulating an entertainer that doesn't even care about them? No, probably not. That's why it's important for you to be the influence your child needs.

The world is a lot different now than it was 10 or even 5 years ago. Children are exposed to more violence and sexual activity than ever before. It's everywhere - in songs, on television, and in the movies. Positive role models can help children avoid being overly influenced by negativity in the media.

Good role models help children develop high self-esteem. Instead of making a child feel inferior because they don't look a certain way, they encourage them to appreciate their appearance. Good role models don't make teens feel inferior because they weigh more than a super model. Most importantly, they teach children to care about more than looks and superficial things.

Children that have negative role models are more likely to struggle in life. They're more likely to struggle academically, drop out of school, commit crimes or end up in jail. Without anyone to influence them in a positive way, it's harder to develop into a well-rounded adult. It can be done, but it will be difficult.

Are you a good influence for your child? How do you behave when your child is around? If anything you're doing has a negative effect on your child, then you're not a good role model. Getting drunk, being verbally or physically abusive or beating on a spouse sets a terrible example.

Become a positive influence on a child starting right now. If you need professional help, go out and get it. Make an effort to be the role model your child needs.
