Why Children Join Gangs

Such is the demand nowadays that both parents have to work in order for a family to be able to live comfortably within their means. This can sometimes lead to the children feeling isolated and left out of a family environment.

Research has now shown that a lot of children actually join gangs in order to get the feeling of being part of a family.

Many children find themselves being picked on or even bullied at school because they are not self confident enough. This then makes joining the supposed safety of a gang a much more attractive proposition to them.

Many disillusioned children feel that joining a gang will keep them safe. This is totally unfounded and if anything it can put not just them but their family at risk too from rival gang members.

This is not their intentions when joining these gangs. Many children just do not realize what extent gang memberships can lead up to. They have no idea that by joining a certain gang that they could in fact inadvertently put all of their family in harms way from other rival factions.

Unfortunately gang members are more than 60% more likely to become a homicide statistic than normal members of society. Many young people do not realize this and certainly did not mean for anything like this to happen in their lives. To them joining a gang was just about feeling wanted and feeling safe in a family environment.

Being a parent it is your responsibility to make sure that this never happens to your kids. You do not have to give up employment to do this just make sure that you interact with your kids and make them feel loved. Try to interest them in any form of sport or any other hobbies that they show an interest in. Anything that stops them from getting into the gang culture will be a good thing.

Children just need to be valued and find something to occupy their minds. If you can spend time with your kids and get them interested in anything that steers them away from gangs you could end up saving their lives without even knowing it.
