As a self-proclaimed expert in the mobile car washing business, I am often asked questions by mobile car wash operators who are expanding their businesses. Indeed, recently I was asked by an operator if he should buy the best, or maximum pressure washer available on the market, at least he was inferring this question, and yet, at the same time wishing to save money, not to over spend, and to get exactly what he needed. He was considering cleaning auto dealership car lots.
This is a common question of most mobile car wash businesses, obviously because car dealerships have lots of brand-new cars sitting in rows to be cleaned, and when the economy is good these car dealerships are cleaning these cars twice per week, during the current economic condition they are cleaning the once a week, but that's still a lot of cars to clean. So does it make sense to get the most expensive hot-water pressure washer to run a mobile car wash business? Not necessarily, let me explain;
You see, the maintenance costs add up and the more complex the unit, the more maintenance will be required, and the more things they can break. And, you must remember that many of the people that work on pressure washers these days are charging in excess of $75-$80 per hour for maintenance, some still only charge $35 -45, but they are getting harder and harder to find these days. Not all of them charge excessive hourly rates, but a good many of them do.
If you buy your steam cleaner or pressure washer from them, and you get an expensive skid unit that's the $5000 or more, chances are they will give you some free services and free maintenance, but they will start charging you, and that's how they make a good portion of their money on maintenance, not necessarily the sale of equipment, especially when they are attempting to clear inventory and you walk in with cash, right now I bet you can get a killer deal.
All these issues are something to think about, and you want to be on good terms with the people that sell you equipment, because they might also funnel jobs that they hear about out of the field to your business, knowing that if they help you grow your business, you are more than likely to buy more machines from them. These are all considerations as to what type of pressure washer you should buy; hot or cold.
Although cleaning vehicles with pressure washers doesn't seem like rocket science, if you treat it as rocket science and study all aspects of it you'll make a lot more money, and be quite efficient in your operations. You must remember that in this business the money is in the time and the efficiency not necessarily the job. You might bid per job, or per car, but you make your real money in the speed at which you can complete the job to the quality satisfaction of the customer.
You must always remember the money is in the time - you must always seek total efficiency. Think of car washing as a Six Sigma operation, as it is my contention that in the service industry efficiency is even more important than in manufacturing for attaining greater profits. Please consider all this.
