I have been reading a lot of different articles about soy wax and find that there appears to be quite the debate about the wax. Some say it is better for the environment, others say it is no different than burning other waxes.
I burnt my first soy candle a few weeks ago and I found it to burn very slow and it did not leave a soot residue on the jar that holds it, so in my eyes, that is good enough for me. The fragrance in the soy candle was lovely yet not overpowering so it was a joy to burn.
One of my friends accidentally tipped the candle over and found the soy wax was not hot to touch and even felt great on her skin. We started rubbing the wax on our hands and it made our hands very soft. And the wax that was spilt on my table cleaned up easily. I had heard soy wax cleaned up with soap and water and that held very true.
I have been using a paraffin wax in my foot bath which is a treat but I cannot see any reason not to try soy wax in it now. It will probably be even better as the paraffin gets quite hot while the soy does not. That is another great reason I switched to soy wax.
The debate also appears to stress that soy wax is not 100% natural as people say it is. I do not think it matters to me if it is 100% natural as long as it is doing something better for the environment. I would rather burn something that comes from a plant than oil based any day. If a soy candle burns soot free, that has to be a good choice.
Soy wax is produced from soybean oil but may contain other non-soy ingredients. Soybean oil is separated from the solid components by solvent extraction or by mechanical pressing. This raw oil will be further refined and bleached. Is our flour not bleached as well? Is this not something that needs to be done to give products a better looking color and texture?
The exact steps to produce soy wax are well protected and every producer may have his own secrets. If you quit using candles because of the soot was left on your walls, furniture, draperies and carpets, try a soy candle. You will not be disappointed.
