The other day I was having a conversation with a friend of mine. We were talking about the number of e-book authors that we are familiar with who are very impoverished and broke. The reason why these authors are in the financial condition they are in has nothing to do with the viability of the e-book publishing industry. It has more to do with the fact that a lot of e-book authors do not think like publishers. They have a tendency to focus on creating a quality e-book and completely neglect the marketing and distribution aspects of making your e-book successful.
You might fall into this category -- somebody who has written an e-book and is not made much money with it. As a result, you might be thinking that the e-book publishing business isn't for you. Nothing could be further from the truth. You are actually better positioned to be successful as an e-book publisher than 99% of the people who get started with this business. Why? Because the overwhelming majority of people who fail as e-book publishers do so because they never get around to publishing an e-book. You, on the other hand, fall into the relatively rare category of people who have published an e-book but have failed to adequately market and promote it. There is also a slight chance that you did it make a strong effort to promote your e-book only to realize that there really wasn't much of a market for the topic that you chose to write about. That's something that can be easily fixed -- picking a popular topic is something you can learn. The fact that you nevertheless created an e-book from scratch speaks volumes about your work ethic and your ability to actually get something done.
If you want to make money as an e-book author, then you need to start thinking about the e-book publishing world from the perspective of a publisher. Trust me, you have what it takes to make a lot of money with in the e-book publishing industry. With a little bit of fine tuning, you could probably be making a full-time income in this business within 3 to 6 months. No guarantee of that, of course, but in my experience people like you have what it takes to be successful in this business.
