Who is Horatio Horatio Alger, Junior

Was an American writer who wrote at least a hundred books for boys. Millions of copies of his books were sold, during his life and long after his death. All of them were books about boys who started life in humble circumstances, perhaps as orphans or as poor boys, but who worked hard and were honest and eventually became very successful. The critics did not think Horatio Alger's books were good, but the American people loved them because they were the perfect expression of the American democratic ideal in which a boy can be born in a became a minister in the Unitarian church, then moved to New York City and did some work helping the poor boys who sold newspapers, worked as shoeshine boys, and did other things that hardly paid them enough to live on.

Many of his books were written about boys who found themselves in just those circumstances. Sometimes he would have his poor boys defended by rich Harvard graduates, since he had himself gone to college at Harvard, and in many ways he used the experiences of his own life in his writing.
