Who Sells Portable Fishfinders GPS Units?

Expert Author Mohammed Bhimji

Who doesn't enjoy fishing on the weekend? It is a great time for men to be men, and for families to spend quality time together. It give time for "the guys" to hang out, and share fishing stores. Of course the more serious fishers spend their time perfecting their sport, by looking for the best fishing rods or the type of tackle (hooks, lines, sinkers, floats, rods, reels, baits, lures, spears, nets, gaffs, traps, waders are all examples of what tackle is). Fishing in fact goes back thousands of years and is an ancient practice going to the Paleolithic time period during a period where most people lived a hunter-gatherer lifestyle which also meant they were always on the move.

Moving forward fishing is a major industry for many areas close to the water and while commercial fishing is big business there are many recreational fishers who go out and fish as a way to add variety to the dinner table or to just relax and fish for sport thereby releasing the fish after it has been caught. For the more serious recreational fisher, some equipment is a must and they will spend hundreds of dollars on ensuring that they are outfitted with the best equipment. In the past this meant fishing rods or other tackle however today it also increasingly includes fishfinders.

There are very few manufacturers of portable fishfinder GPS units, and like their counterparts in the automotive world Garmin is one of the major players in this niche however Humminbird (not Humming Bird or Hummingbird) is another company that sells into this specialized area with several model like Fishin' Buddy, and PiranhaMax.

Garmin is another manufacturer of fishfinder GPS units. With a good, solid reputation behind them their fish finders are also highly talked about. In doing research it was discovered that many people bought a Garmin Fishfinder because they've owned or currently own a Garmin automobile GPS unit. The majority of Garmin fishfinders are color units, and all are portable. Garmin fishfinder units start as low as $80.00 and work their way up to around $1,000.00 for the more serious fisherman and sailor that demands an above-par marine GPS to navigate waterways.

Between Garmin and Humminbird, there are only a few other manufacturers. These include Lowrance, Eagle, Furuno and Raymarine. The Lowrand, and RayMarine fishfinders are on the upper-end of the scale when it came to cost while Eagle was mid-level pricing -- similar to Garmin.
