White sauce recipes are very useful and are something almost all of us know how to make off by heart. It is so quick and easy and there is so much you can do with them. If someone were to ask you to whip up a quick recipe I'm sure there would be no problem. It is the first thing you learn in the kitchen because it goes with just about everything. It is almost as popular as the old bbq sauce recipes.
This is also a mother sauce, which means it is a base and from there you can decide what you want to add to make it unique or different to be able to go with the dish you are making. A typical one would be good old cauliflower and cheese. Tomato sauce recipes also work out this way because they act as the base as well and you also add ingredients in the same way.
Here are a few things you can add to a white sauce recipe so that it doesn't become as predictable every time you serve it.
- Add different types of cheeses. It doesn't always have to be cheddar. You could make a blue cheese sauce and serve it with a fillet steak
- Add basil with extra cream. Add in some left over pesto
- Tomato and chili makes a good combination. You can go as hot as you want.
- Roast garlic in the oven, mash it up and mix it in
- Use different herbs, depending on what you are serving.
