In addition to learning about the process of building a chicken coop, we recommend that some research and consideration be given to the breed of chicken before beginning construction. As with any animal, every breed will have different characteristics, so it's important to determine the ideal breed or breeds to include in your flock before purchasing.
The first issue to consider is the primary purpose of your chickens. Most folks will be attracted to chickens for their egg-laying abilities. However, some might also be raising chickens for meat, or even as pets. Some breeds are called dual-purpose as they are good for both their egg-laying ability and are good for meat as well. In this regard it's good to remember that most breeds will produce diminishing egg production after age three.
Another characteristic that is important to consider is their friendliness towards humans. For those strictly raising chickens for eggs or meat, this may be unimportant, however many enjoy these birds as pets as well. Particularly if children are involved, you may want to consider breeds known for their friendly demeanor and ability to share contact with humans.
Some breeds are better suited for confined environments, while others are more suited to a "free-range" situation. If one has the room and capability to allow their chickens to run free for a portion of each day, then certainly purchase a breed optimized for that of environment. Studies have shown that free-range chickens produce a healthier egg, and there is the added advantage of not having to provide feed. Be aware also that some breeds are more suited to harsh or cold climates than others, so consider your climate when making a final selection.
Although this article is not meant to an exhaustive reference on chicken breeds, it should provide a good foundation to further investigate breeds available in your area. A good way to begin is to investigate which breeds are available through local farm supply stores and breeders, and then do some further research on the
internet on those specific breeds.
