Where to Shoot Your First Film

One of the first things to consider as you dive into the process of filmmaking is where to shoot your first film. There are so many options; even your grandma's basement is a possible location. But you can whittle down the options to just the very best that are out there without having to worry too much about getting it right the first time when you can succeed if you just try again every time you fail. Just read on.

Get out and look around your own town. If you need a parking lot, see if there is a store that will let you shoot in their parking lot for free. If you need an apartment, see if a friend will let you take over theirs for a few days. Whatever the case, don't ever pay for anything.

If you plan to shoot in a park or other public place, you will need to clear it with your city leaders first. Simply ask at city hall. They may make you register; they may make you pay a small fee. In the end they will probably let you shoot where you want to shoot.

When you go to get your permit, make sure you know what the answers to the questions they will ask will be. They will want to know when you will be shooting, how long, whether you will be using power or fire or explosives or anything like that, and whether they will need to have representatives on hand to close off streets or such things.

If you want to shoot in a local restaurant or diner, that's a really great idea. These kinds of businesses are often very accommodating as they see a potential benefit from the shoot in terms of a little bit of free publicity. Plus they will often give you free access to anything you need to make the movie a reality.

Always respect the restaurant or coffee house you are shooting in. Business owners may be letting you be there, but that doesn't mean you have free reign of the place. It's still their business.

Other great locations include libraries, schools, universities and other municipal buildings. These are maintained by government institutions, but as long as you have the paperwork in order, it is rarely very expensive.

Filmmaking doesn't have to be a beast. As long as you conduct your planning before you start shooting, you will find is relatively smooth and maybe even a lot of fun.
