When to Begin Reading to Your Child

Although it should be general knowledge, many parents do not know when they should begin reading to their child. Many of the experts on the subject claim that there are great benefits to the child if reading is introduced early. Some parents have gone so far as reading to the fetus while it is still in the womb. Parents that have followed this practice claim that they could clearly see the benefits in their newborn babies. However, it is the not purpose of this article to speak for or against reading to children in the womb.

If you want to know the best time to begin reading to your child, the answer is now. Do not let another day pass without establishing a pattern and a routine for reading to your child. Of course, the earlier you start, the more it will benefit your child, but now is all we have. Get prepared by setting out some books and begin reading stories to your child before bed. Begin by reading two or three short stories each night. This will take less than 15 minutes, but your child will reap tremendous benefits.

Choose books that are appropriate for your child's age. If you are beginning with a baby, it is best to use board books. This will help keep reading time a joyous time without stress over baby ripping the pages of the book. Many times babies enjoy chewing on a board book while they are being read another book.

In a perfect world, parents would begin reading to their babies at birth. This would establish a pattern of reading that would last a lifetime. Children that are read to are much more likely to develop a lifetime love of reading than children that are not read to. Reading to our children opens their imaginations, teaches them about the world around them, introduces numbers, letters, colors and shapes and helps them to understand the language of books. Since the way we write is different that the way we speak, we are giving our children a great understanding of how written language sounds by reading to them regularly.

Reading to children can be a very enjoyable experience for all involved. By selecting good books, playing around with different voices and using lots of expression as we read, we can create a very exciting environment for our children. Reading to our children is a huge factor in teaching them to read. Children that are read to generally learn to read very easily and without effort. Why not start reading to your child today?
