A cool website is great - but results are what we seek. It is always tough to measure web results. I am not SEO savvy, so I make no expert claims about what I am about to scribe. So here are a few things that I stumbled upon during our web rehab.
There is a site by the name of Alexa. I believe it is owned by Amazon. They try to gauge web rankings and I have no idea what their formulas are or how they calculate a ranking. Before the redesign our World Ranking was 2,221,373 our US ranking was 464,185.
As of July 7, 2010, our new ranking is 1,486,803 and our US ranking bolted to 237,846. Being a proud analytical, it was easy for me to spin the numbers and call this is quantifiable success. There are some 25 million sites ranked, so I feel pretty good about being close to the top 5%. So that is good enough for me and I do not want to burst my bubble by researching the rankings too much more and finding there is really only 1,500,000 currently ranked. I encourage you to take a look at your own.
Another thing they display are sites linking to your site. Links are supposed to be a huge factor in SEO rankings. The type of sites linking in is also a key factor. When I saw the links to my site, I noticed that Yahoo was not one of them. We have been in business for 11 years and I have never had my site added to the Yahoo directory, shame on me. So I did a little research and found out that you have to pay to be listed in the Yahoo directory. There is a fee of $299.00.
I decided to do it, even though we already had pretty good rankings for local searches. I read both pros and cons and there certainly was not a definite answer. We are now in their directory and I am guessing it will appear in the linked listing in Alexa down the road (they update that portion quarterly.)
