"The money is in the list" is probably the most overused slogan in internet marketing. Overused and at the same time, it is not even true in every case, so let me show you an example where it does not apply. Sometimes you shouldn't build a list.
When can you make money without building a mailing list?
...and when building a list is a waste of your time, and even jeopardizes your earnings.
Well, selling Consumer Electronics, consumer goods, and pricey physical products are the types of commission generating sales that you are probably better off selling without attempting to build a list at the same time.
The reasons not to build a list?
- One-time purchases don't generate a high followup response... And what could you upsell to them?
- Physical products that are readily available through brick and mortar stores make people behave different than if they searched for information products.
It makes sense, a lot of sense, to skip the optin process with high priced products. After all, these are one-time purchases, and what are you going to sell them after they bought their, for example, plasma TV?
If it were customary to buy a plasma TV set from a TV promotion, the way most info products are promoted, you would be home-free. It would be great for you, but unfortunately the market isn't going in that direction!
The truth is, forcing people to sign up to your list before they get to the product often stops them cold... and they won't even click on your affiliate link and won't buy. The merchant may put buyers on a list after the sale, but never before.
If you you're targeting high-end products, you should be concentrating on buying keywords - the exact make, the model, the year, the color, etc. Prospects, who use these keywords in their search, are sitting their ready to buy with their credit card in hand. They are interested in the "add to cart," not the "this is the reason you should be on my list"!
If you're in many different niches and selling many different products in all those niches, then listbuilding won't pay off for you: more time than the rewards justify. On the other hand, if you are focusing on one niche or one market then, of course, the money IS in the list, though you must always remember that each market has its own preferences and some will not want to read... imagine that!
When someone searches fir that "buying keyword" like Samsung Plasma TV, model #12870x8, they're ready to buy, or want to make sure that they'd made the right choice, and you are best off giving them what they want without any delay so they can buy and you can make your commission.
Conclusion: if you are targeting buying keywords for a physical product, squeeze pages are an unnecessary step where you can lose that red hot prospect, instead of gently take them to the place where they can buy.
We can conclude, that the Money Is In The List applies to info products and not physical products especially not when people are searching for buying keywords.
