A lot of people don't even really think too much about a domain name when they're picking one out. They just want to get their website up there and they don't really care what the URL is at all. However, your domain name can be really important especially if you're thinking about doing a lot of online marketing. So before you go and buy a domain name and throw it up there here are a few simple things to think about that can make a really big difference.
.com is always best -.com is what people think of when they think of a domain name. So whenever possible it's best to use.com if anything simply to avoid confusion. You don't want to miss out on a prospect just because they went to.com instead of.net.
Short is better if possible - The thing about long domain names is that they are easily forgettable. Also, there are more words to be misspelled. The longer the domain the more problems you're going to have. Sometimes it's pretty unavoidable after all there are a lot of domains that are taken and it's not likely that you're going to get a one or two word domain but keep it as short as you can. Your domain shouldn't be a sentence! A phrase maybe but not a sentence.
Use keywords - Keywords are good for a lot of things but especially search engine optimization. If your website gets on the first page of google for any given subject you're golden and keywords are how you can get there. So do some keyword research and find out the keywords that you want to target before you buy a domain name.
Make it memorable - funny, catchy and memorable domains are awesome. Anything that people will remember is a good thing. If someone can't remember your website in the time it takes them to drive home that's not a good thing. Keep it simple and if you can keep it funny. Memorable is always better.
