If you are a coffee drinker, but are not sure how to make your coffee taste as good what you get at a coffeehouse, then here are a few tips to help you make coffee that is sure to tantalize the taste buds!
Making a Great Cup of Coffee
- Always begin with a clean coffee pot. This does not have to be the most expensive one available, but it does need to be clean.
- Purchase coffee beans as soon after they have been roasted as possible in order to ensure the best flavor. In addition, buy small amounts of coffee so that you can use it before it goes stale. For the average consumer, this is approximates buying coffee every 1 to 2 weeks.
- The water you use plays an important factor in the flavor of your coffee. It is recommended that you only use fresh cold filtered water. Or, if you have water that leaves an unpleasant aftertaste, you may wish to use Artesian water, but do not use distilled water!
- For grinding your coffee, you will want to use either a burr coffee grinder or a blade coffee grinder. While both will produce coffee grinds, the better and more consistent grinder is the burr grinder. You should grind your coffee beans as close to actual time of use as possible, and only the amount needed, as the flavor deteriorates quickly.
- If your coffee pot is supposed to be used with a filter, then do it! For best results, use an unbleached (brown) paper filter or a gold filter; the bleached filter will affect the flavor of the coffee.
- The water to coffee ratio is an important part of the process. Typical ratio for 2 tablespoons of coffee beans to 6 ounces of water or 8 heaping tablespoons for 4 cups of coffee.
- Once coffee is made, don't delay! Coffee is best when it is enjoyed immediately.
