What is the Process For Getting Dental Crowns?

We are normally recommended to have dental crowns for a range of reasons. It maybe that you have a tooth that is cracked or in disrepair and covering it will give it the strength it needs to stay put in your mouth. If your tooth is broken, or has been worn down through damage, this procedure can restore it back to what it used to be. You may have had a large filling inside the tooth, which has weakened it and made it susceptible to further damage. Covering it protects it from falling apart again. You can also have one put into place for cosmetic reasons, to make your smile look brighter and healthier if front teeth have become heavily discoloured or nerves have died, causing them to look dead.

They can be made from a range of materials. The first ones were made from gold alloy and other metals, which of course are rather obvious in the mouth and therefore no longer used as often. While they can last the longest because of their strength, they are often not preferred due to their appearance.

The most common method today is to use a ceramic of porcelain cover, some of which are fused with a metal backing for strength. It is up to your dentist to talk you through the options and different costs. They can help you work out what is best for your mouth in the long term.

Before permanent dental crowns are put into place, you will need to have a temporary one installed. This is to protect any work done on your tooth before the final work is completed. A temporary one is constructed by the dentist while you are in the chair, whereas the other has to be made away from the surgery to fit your mouth exactly. This can take a little while.

You can expect to have some x-rays taken of your tooth before any major work is done. This shows exactly where the work is to be done, and what length of damage there is. It can also show if there is infection, which needs to be all cleared up before any major work is carried out.
