What is the Correct Golf Stance Width? Learn How to Get it Right and Play Better Golf!

Expert Author Troy V

It is one of the most confusing aspects of the golf swing set up that divides opinion amongst golfer's world wide. Many will argue that the correct golf stance width is a wide golf stance and others advocate a narrower golf stance. There are a few variables that need to be taken into account before one can identify a right or wrong answer.

Golfer's come in all shapes and sizes and this impacts on the width of your stance. What type of golf swing you have also plays a large part in determining the golf stance width that will work best for you. Other factors which have an influence are your height, weight and the strength and speed of your golf swing.

Here are a few basic guidelines that can help you decide what is the correct golf stance width for you.

Generally the taller you are the wider your stance should be. The higher your centre of gravity is the wider your golf stance needs to be to maintain the right balance. Conversely, a shorter person should have a much narrower stance because their centre of gravity is a lot lower.

Most golf instructors agree that the correct golf stance width is about shoulder width apart. This is the width across between the inside of your feet as you stand parallel to the golf ball and not the outside. The stance can be moved a bit wider for your longer clubs such as the driver and fairway woods as these clubs are a few inches longer and thus produce a wider arc of the golf swing.

Golfers with powerful, stronger golf swings will feel more balanced with a wider stance. Golfers with slower, smoother golf swings will feel more comfortable with a much narrower stance. It's important to remember this though: too wide a stance can restrict a golfer from completing a good turn back and through the golf swing. This can result in a lot of blocks, pushes and slices of the golf ball. Conversely, too narrow a stance can result in too much lateral sway and a lack of balance. This results in pulls, hooks and a lot of poorly timed golf shots.

You need to find a balance and what feels most comfortable for your golf swing. Feel free to experiment with different stance widths and analyse the results. Try to stick to around shoulder width apart and adjust accordingly for the longer and shorter golf clubs in your golf bag. Give these tips a try and you should be able to find the right golf stance width in no time.
