What is a Coin Flip Hand in Texas Hold Em? This Funny Term Explained

Expert Author Alex Bannon

Do you play Texas Hold Em and have you asked yourself the question 'What is a coin flip hand?' Read this article to understand this term now.

Have you heard of a coin flip hand in Texas Hold Em but don't actually know what it means? That's fine. When I first started playing I didn't know what it meant either. People told me 'avoid coin flip hands' and 'don't all in on a coin flip' but I didn't actually know what it was.

In Texas Hold Em Poker there are many slang terms and words that mean different things. Sometimes these are straightforward but other times it can be confusing for a new player when they hear all of these and don't know what they mean.

What A Coin Flip Hand Is And Why It Matters To You!

I'm going to explain what a coin flip hand is right now. This is a term that refers to a type of hand you can have, i.e. your hole cards plus the cards on the table.

A coin flip hand gets its name because your chance of winning the hand is about 50 percent. This is about your chance of winning a bet on the flip of a coin. Generally playing coin flip hands isn't the best because your are leaving your success up to luck. Truly successful poker players tip the odds in their favour and don't cross their fingers and hope they win.

An example of a coin flip hand would be if you had an under pair and your opponent had two overcards. So say you have a pair of queens but your opponent has an A-K in a heads up. The odds of either of you winning are about the same and the outcome is really up to chance.

So in this situation, half the time you would make it through and win with the queens. The other half either a king or an ace would show up and you would lose. So you wouldn't really want to bet all your stack on this, would you, because you could lose it all.

Of course you can never 100% make sure you will win a game of Hold Em. It doesn't matter if you know what a coin flip hand is or not, sometimes a weird card will show up and you'll lose. But the idea is to increase your chances of winning - a lot better then 50%. If you want 50% just go play roulette and put it all on black.
