What is Wrong With Dieting?

Expert Author Dani Linkhart

Each year millions of people go on a diet. The business of selling diets is huge! And we can understand this, because obesity in the U.S. has become epidemic. Diabetes is becoming a major factor in the health of our nation. And we have been told that we must lose weight or else! So what is wrong with dieting?

One problem with dieting is that, generally speaking, people who go on a diet, almost always go off the diet. Another problem is that most diets are not well balanced, they do not provide our bodies with the proper amounts of protein, fats, carbohydrates or fiber. Some are missing an entire food group, such as carbohydrates or fats. When our eating habits leave out whole food groups, our bodies experience cravings or such hunger that we just cannot stay on a diet.

The key to success in losing weight is to eat a well-balanced diet, in the proper amounts, at the proper times. We do not need to starve our bodies and we do not need to be hungry. Another very important factor in losing weight is to eat a low-glycemic diet. The low-glycemic index measures the length of time it takes certain carbohydrates to reach the blood stream and affect the body's blood sugar. Not all carbs are the same. Some carbohydrates actually spike our blood sugar faster than table sugar. The good news is that you can learn which carbohydrates are good for you and which will cause more harm to an already stressed system.

Another added benefit of a low-glycemic diet is that the fat taken off our bodies comes right off the waistline. We can get rid of the flab around the middle and the pot belly in front. This is the fat that causes many of our health problems today.

The secret to losing weight and maintaining it is to make the decision to make a healthy diet part of your lifestyle, along with moderate exercise and good cellular nutrition.
