Shea butter comes from a nut. It is extracted from the fruit kernel of the Karite nut tree which is found only in Central Africa. This natural body butter is one of nature's most precious gifts.
It takes the Karite tree at least 20 years to produce its first fruit, which resembles a plum. Once the tree reaches around 45 years old the tree is in full production and continues to bear fruit for up to 200 years. Traditionally, African women would extract Shea butter from the nuts. The women would collect the Shea nuts, dry and crack them to get to the kernel. They would then grill and pound them followed by boiling them for hours until it would rise to the surface. The Shea butter would then be collected and left to cool and set. Although it liquefies easily, it is solid at room temperature. Today, there are much more modern techniques used for extracting the butter.
Shea butter has been used for hundreds of years because of its beneficial properties. It contains vitamins A, E & F, which work really well together to balance the skin. It does a lot more than just moisturize. It improves the skin's tone by evening it out and fading blemishes. Shea butter penetrates deep into the skin's layers stimulating cellular activity and restores elasticity, thus making it a great choice for those that have mature and sun damaged skin by softening the appearance of wrinkles. Vitamin A in this body butter assists with wound healing and improves the appearance of scars, blemishes and stretch marks. Applying a liitle bit after shaving helps prevent red bumps and irritation. Vitamin E, which is found in it, is an anti-oxidant that protects the skin from environmental damage, which allows proper utilization of oxygen to the skin. Individuals with insufficient Vitamin F can lead to dry skin and eczema.
Shea butter can provide all of these essential vitamins to your skin. The best way to apply it is after a warm bath while the skin is still damp. This allows the skin to absorb all the great nutrients of the Shea Butter.
