Sexual anorexia is a loss of interest or fear of an intimate or romantic sexual relationship. These individuals typically avoid having sexual relations with anyone who they are involved with romantically including their spouse if they are married.
However, in some cases the sexual anorexic may choose to have sexual encounters with anonymous partners, frequent strip clubs, pay for a prostitute, and be heavily into pornography as it is the fear of romantic intimacy and not the fear of sex that causes them to avoid certain sexual encounters. In other cases of sexual anorexia the individual will completely abstain from any type of sexual encounter. Sexual anorexia is experienced primarily by women but also does occur in some men.
Causes of Sexual Anorexia
There are many cases of sexual anorexia where the individual has an extreme shyness or a distorted view of their appearance or body image. There are also some individuals who have an extreme phobia of any type of sexual activity which is sometimes due to a traumatic experience such as rape or childhood sexual abuse.
Some sexual anorexics withhold sex as it gives them a feeling of control, and some will only have participate in sexual relations with an individual which they have no emotional attachment. Others avoid sexual relationships out of fear of being vulnerable or hurt.
Treatment of Sexual Anorexia
Treatment for sexual anorexia consists of therapy or counseling where the primary goal of treatment is to discover what is actually causing their fear of intimacy and dealing with these issues.
In cases where the individual has issues with how they view there body image or appearance, therapy can help them to overcome these distorted views. Individuals who have a fear of becoming hurt in romantic relationships are encouraged to engage in social activities setting healthy boundaries and taking calculated risks.
