What is Hypnosis? - Conversational Hypnosis
Print This Article Ezine Publisher Send To Friends Add To Favorites Post A Comment Suggest Topic Report Author

I should and will start this article by stating that I am not a professional hypnotist. What I am is an enthusiast and find the subject fascinating. I have put a good amount of research into this little effort all with the hope you will find it as interesting as I have.

Hypnosis, whether conversational or otherwise, seems to have a different meaning to everyone. They will tell you that Hypnosis is an altered state of mind where a person is placed in a trance. But how about "conversational Hypnosis?" There is a description you don't often see.

I'm going to attempt to compare the two procedures as best I can. Here we go. Let's take a look at hypnosis first. It is as stated above. A subject is put into a very relaxed environment and state of mind and given a series of suggestions. The more comfortable the subject becomes the more trance like the state of mind. This opens the subject up to be very vulnerable to a hypnotic suggestion, however, the idea that a person can be made to do something against their nature is false.

Hypnosis is a tool used by professionals to help a subject better his or her life. Perhaps by releasing a hidden memory or to have the increased will power to stop a bad habit such as smoking or even over eating. It is important to know that even though a subject is made very susceptible to suggestion they will not do things against that are not in their nature. Also a professional would never violate ethics by trying to put that type of subliminal suggestion into any patient's thoughts.

Now how about conversational hypnosis? In my research I have found that this is a skill that anyone can learn and use. Some people use conversational hypnosis without even realizing that they are using it. However, strictly speaking it is recognized as a relationship developed between the subject and the professional that transcends normal restraints of typical rapport and develops a deep relationship.

This will save a professional a lot of time when treating a subject. Now for the fun part! I want you to try this next time you meet a person you want to persuade. Perhaps you have been told how difficult a person is to work with. This is my idea of conversational hypnosis and it works just fine.

Now imagine yourself in one of the above described situations. You walk into a prospective client's office. You notice that he has the typical power setting going on in his office. The desk and chair positioning and tie color and physical posture. He looks up from his compulsively neat desk and loudly acknowledges your presence and points to the chair you should take.

You have just summed up the personality you believe you are dealing with so here you go. Move the chair, if possible, to face the client head on. Now acknowledge him with a THANK YOU in as close to the same tone of voice and volume that he used on you. Believe it or not he won't even notice so don't be mislead into the idea that he will think you are being disrespectful. You are not being disrespectful you are setting the tone for a little conversational hypnosis.

Watch his posture and emulate it as much as possible. If he uses strong eye contact you do the same. If he happens to be leaning toward you when he speaks you do the same. This is fun and you will be amazed at what will start to happen.

Suddenly you will realize that you can lead and he will follow. Suddenly you will be able to make a suggestion to him and he will listen. It's amazing. No, this is not a Jedi mind trick! Why does this happen? It's the suggestion you are giving him.

This is conversational hypnosis? How does this fit any description of Hypnosis? Think about it. What signals have you been sending since you first met the client? Who is the one person that he will always like above all others?

Did you get it? Somewhere in your conversation his mind simply said "hey, he is just like me!" Everyone likes themselves and their own ideas above anyone else's so once the subliminal suggestion is planted "he is just like me", you will have a relationship with that client that will have him or her feeling like they have known you all their lives.

I have known sales people that are very gook at this technique and it has proven to be a great benefit to their career. Please remember that just like a subject in a trance like state cannot be made to do things against their nature, it is also true that even though you will develop a long lasting relationship with a client he will not do just whatever you like. All this will do for you is open the door to listening. Your client will be very apt to listen to your presentation because after all "you are just like him" and he would never have anything unimportant to show himself.

B. J. Lyons While hypnosis is not a word we hear everyday, it is a word that many people seem to have a preconceived definition for. The most common thought is that hypnosis is an altered state of mind that brings the subject to a trance like state. Conversational Hypnosis is a more subliminal approach to suggestions given to a subject. If you are serious about learning more look at What is Conversational Hypnosis
