What You Should Know About Settling Your Debts For 50 Cents on the Dollar

Debt settlement has become quite heavily promoted these days and the unfortunate thing is companies are coming out of the wood work to jump on the band wagon to settle debts for individuals. I have heard some of these businesses trying to pass this debt relief option off as a bailout plan for individuals and nothing is farther from the truth. It may bail you out, but it is not even close to what the businesses got to help them financially.

In some instances, debt settlement may be the best option for you, but the problem is that most of the advertising that goes along with it is deceptive. Debt settlement is a reduction in the total amount owed on a credit card account. This reduction is accomplished through a negotiation process with the lender. This can be done either by you or you can hire a service to do it. But be aware that hiring this service out can be expensive.

Whether you hire out your debt negotiation or do it yourself, there are some other major disadvantages that many services do not go out of their way to tell you. First, settling your debts will ruin your credit. For some this may not be a major issue, if you already have negative credit. But if your accounts are current, I would not sacrifice my credit for a quick fix.

The second thing that many people do not know going into debt settlement is you will be taxed on the amount of debt that is written off. This amount of debt that you are not going to be paying is considered income by the federal government and they want their fair share. This debt relief option is considered a last resort before bankruptcy. If you think you can take current credit card accounts and just decide to settlement them for fifty cents on the dollar you are most likely going to be disappointed.

The best option is to start by consulting a credit counseling company. These organizations are nonprofit and are in the business of helping people get out of debt. These services also work with other types of debt relief companies and can easily refer you to a debt settlement or bankruptcy professional if that is what is needed. Get a quote for getting out of debt quickly.
