Before starting any freelance business online, it is extremely important to do an inventory. Make a list, make several lists and then organize those lists. After you are finished looking the lists over, then it's time to troubleshoot and add more things to the lists.
When you think you are finished with writing lists, show these lists to some friends or mentors and ask them if you forgot anything. In the end, you will not be able to cover everything.
Lists may seem useless to those who don't live inside that type of a box, but lists can be a great reminder that you are trying to be as prepared as possible as you develop your freelancing skills into a business.
The people who end up working online and failing are more than a few. The main reason people fail in their attempts to create a successful freelance business online are the same principles that apply in any business venture. Being prepared and willing to do what it takes to be successful is everything.
A few important key elements to know before beginning your freelance business.
1. Identify exactly what services you will be providing.
Yes, this may sound elementary, but it's important that you have your freelance services spelled out in terms that you can understand and convey to prospects as well. Misunderstandings will happen anyway, but if you are going to be that web designer for high-end clients, then spell it out as simply and directly as possible in writing.
Whatever service you will be offering online, your ability to be a good communicator will be tasked.
2. Unless your service is so unique that no one else is your competitor, find out what your competition is doing.
Especially if you have never been in business as a freelancer before, research your competition and how they are getting business. This kind of information is invaluable to you. You simply can't put a price tag on this. You need a guide, a barometer to gauge by so you have a realistic idea of what you can expect to charge, how vast is the competition, the demand for your type of services, etc.
3. Duplication is a powerful key to success.
First, there was McDonald's, then came Burger King. After that, all of the rest of the fast food franchises followed. They built their success by duplicating the formulas for success that others had followed because duplicating successful business models works.
The duplication key is actually an extension of number 2. When you discover what has worked for others who are offering the same services as you, then it's a fairly safe bet that you can follow the same general road map and something good will come from it.
4. Have a great business plan in place.
Freelancing on the Internet as a business means having a solid business plan. Knowing your market and what expectations will arise is essential. If you do not have a good head for this, then outsource this task to someone who has the expertise. It's really that important to you.
You will need to have an idea of budget needs and everything else that falls into outside expenditures.
5. Whatever your freelance business is going to be, if it's online, you will need to be familiar with marketing.
Marketing is a necessary evil of the Internet. Exposure will make or break any online business venture. You can have the best looking website on the Internet, but if no one knows your address, no one will ever find you.
There are many ways to get exposure for your business online. Becoming familiar with different techniques to gain exposure and implement those methods is not difficult to accomplish, but can be very time consuming.
If you have the budget, there are many respected marketing companies online that can expose your service to the right markets for a fee. This can give your freelance business an immediate boost.
6. Almost everything can be resourced over the Internet free.
Use the Internet to verify and back-up your business plan. Visit forums, use the search engines. For every question you might have, the answers for them are available online.
