What Should Be Included in My MMA Training Routine?

Expert Author Tony James Mills

To successfully train to be an MMA contender it is necessary to train your whole body to a level of an elite athlete. It is far more than just strength training or just technique. It is not just looking good either, you must be in peak physical condition to be able to compete in grueling long rounds. All MMA hope-fulls should include strength training, conditioning and technique training to be able to perform at the best they can possible be.

Strength training is an obvious one. Whereas in the past martial arts dojos and gyms were strictly separate, the new breed of MMA training centers now incorporate both under one roof. Even the legendary Bruce Lee eventually turned to weight training to boost his performance and physique. Most successful MMA fighters will incorporate weight training into their routines at least 5 times a week. Shoot for at least an hour per session, but do not for get to give yourself rest days for your muscles to recover.

Conditioning is perhaps the most hated part of any training routine for most but is just as essential as the rest. To avoid the monotony break up your cardio by not just running or hitting the treadmill but adding sports like swimming and racket ball to keep it interesting enough so you don´t quit.

Of course without proper fight training and MMA gear the above training probably won´t mean much in the octagon. You have probably already been trained in one martial art for a period of time, however it is essential to build a well round set of skills for use against a wide range of opponents using different styles. The best thing you can do is get in the octagon and practice, practice, practice. If you can get a coach.
