What Not to Talk About on a Date

Expert Author Amy Seer

When you go out with someone, you want to get to know more about them and it's true that you do want them to learn more about you. However, what you say in the beginning of a relationship will directly affect the possibilities for the relationship to go further. It's important that you know what not to talk about on a date so that you don't give the wrong impression of yourself to the other person. When you say things to a person that doesn't have the whole picture, they can come to a lot of wrong conclusions.

Here are some ideas of what to not talk about on a date:

The number one best example of what not to talk about on a date is your past relationships. This applies to both negative experiences, as well as positive ones. If you talk negatively about a past relationship then your date will wonder if you are telling the whole story or not. They will find themselves wondering what you did wrong in the relationship that you are not telling them about. They will also think that if you find this relationship so important that you have to bring it up in conversation, that maybe you are not really over this person. If you talk positive about an ex, then your date with will wonder why you aren't still with your ex if they were so great. This will leave them feeling as if your ex could cause trouble in a future relationship between the two of you.

Another example of what not to talk about on a date is finances. First of all, it's just tacky. Secondly, most everyone has financial troubles on their mind and no one wants to talk about yours on a date. Also, it's not a good idea to let this person know about your money problems because they could think that you are looking for someone to help you out of your financial situation, or that you would be a bummer to get involved with because you would never have the money to do things. This is a very bad topic of conversation for a date.

You will also want to stay away from negative topics in general. A person goes out to have a good time and listening to another person go on about family problems, job troubles, or legal problems is not most people's idea of a good time. You want to make your time together a pleasurable one for the both of you. The best way to make sure your date is positive is to keep a positive conversation going.
