What Makes a Restaurant Great?

Expert Author Greg Garner

Defining a great restaurant can be very difficult because it is so subjective. A great restaurant can be a fancy fine dining spot overlooking Niagara Falls or it could be a cozy chili parlor in a suburb of Cincinnati. They have charm, excellent service and consistently good food. While it may be tough to write a definition, most people will know a great restaurant after they eat in one.

A great restaurant does not have to be expensive or have sterling silver stemware and Waterford crystal. It is a place that does an outstanding job of satisfying its' customers whoever they may be. A great restaurant could be a breakfast spot outside an auto plant in any industrial town in America. The coffee is hot, the eggs are cooked to order and service is quick so the plant workers can get to their jobs on time. One example of an outstanding restaurant is Price Hill Chili in Cincinnati. It is a family run business that specializes in breakfast and lunch for blue collar types. The prices are affordable and the food is consistently good which earns high marks from the customers.

There are also excellent examples of high end restaurants that are good restaurants but they are not great because they serve $50 steaks in a swank dining room. These places have the same qualities as the mom and pop operations, excellent service and consistently good food. The staff works diligently to make sure that the experience is a good one every time. In the restaurant business, one mistake can cost you a customer for life.

Pride and passion are two traits that you will find in every successful restaurant operator and they work hard to instill that in their employees. A great restaurant has workers who feel like the place is their own are very proud of the job that they do. Earning top ratings from Zagat or other companies is a team effort and if you want your restaurant to be noticed then you need to be doing things to reward your hard working employees. Profit sharing plans and incentive programs are excellent ways to give them a vested interest in the success of your restaurant.
