Many times the most difficult part in developing a home based business is the decision that you have the motivation to accomplish a totally new project. It takes a bit of soul searching on your part to decide whether you want to spend the time and energy to develop a new source of income in which you probably have no previous experience. Once you have committed yourself to this new project, you need to educate yourself about the two major forms of home based businesses. The first is the type that you start from scratch and the second is the type that you buy.

The advantage of a business that you start from scratch is that it can be developed to reflect your personal interests. You can also change it to conform to changes in your business environment such as emerging markets. The majority of new home based businesses are businesses that have been started from scratch. Over the long run they tend to be more successful than the business that you might buy.

So once you have decided to start a business from scratch, you have to market your products or services and encourage customers to buy from you. The resources available to you are advertising or selling through the internet or in most cases, you can use both methods. Part of being a successful home based business owner is learning how to manage your money. First of all, you will need to find the money to finance the upfront costs. However, in most cases, home based businesses require little or no money to get started. Secondly, you need to keep track of your money by using simple accounting or bookkeeping software. Thirdly, set the right price for your products and services. If you don't have the right price, you will either scare you customers away with too high of a price or be swamped with too low of a price. Next, plan for a retirement plan and health insurance. And, lastly, pay your taxes on time.

There are three types of businesses that you can buy: franchises, direct selling, and business opportunities when you are developing your home based business. A franchise is defined as an agreement in which one business grants another business the right to distribute its products or services. There are three major elements of a franchise company. They are: use of a trademark or a trade name, payment of fees or royalties and significant support by the franchiser.

Direct selling opportunities include two major types. They are: single level marketing in which marketers make money by buying products from the parent company and selling them directly to customers. and multi-level marketing in which the marketer makes money in addition to what the single level marketer does, they also sponsor new direct sellers.

The last type of home based business that you can buy is a business opportunity. A business opportunity is not as well structured as either a franchise or a direct selling opportunity. A business opportunity is defined as an idea, product, service or system that someone has developed and then offers to sell it to others to help start their own business. Examples of business opportunities would include dealers, distributors, and brokers.

After reading this, you should have a good idea of the choices available to you for developing your home based business. May you be successful in your endeavor.

Word derivation of the day: Where did the term " poor as a church mouse" come from? The term " poor as a church mouse" is used as an expression of poverty. The reason is that there is no cupboard or larder in a church to produce crumbs for a mouse to feed upon.
