It doesn't matter what name your parents gave you when you're networking. Names are very important in identifying a person but how many people do you know with the same name? It is the impression that you project, that is your real name.
A name is, in our minds, associated with an individual. You can identify your best friend to your most distant relative by the mental associations you make when you hear their names.
Those are the basics but to take it a step further, what happens when you hear the name of a person you had a traumatic experience with? You probably conjure up images and ill feelings that are undesirable.
Ask yourself, was it their actual name that caused an emotional shift or was it the association you made with their name and the traumatic situation? Is my analogy starting to make sense now?
Back to the title of this article, what is your networking name? Is it Enthusiasm? Could it be Leader? Is your name Communicator? Your name could even be, Expert. It is you who ultimately decides what your name is.
This is a stupendous advantage once serious note is taken. Before you step into the arena, you have complete control over your projection. You may not have had a choice about the name you were given at birth but in this case, it's your call.
Do you have a common birth name? If so, when someone references you, what is the emotional/spiritual name they are giving you? What impression have you made? In other words, what is your name?
Long ago in history, people were named because of their attributes. They were named sometimes because of their past actions. In some cases, they were named because of their trade or profession. If this were true today, in a professional business atmosphere, what would your name be?
Would it be, Dependable, Trustworthy, or would people merely yawn when referencing you? This is a good question, especially since your name is what you choose. Now that you know you have a choice, do you have a common name?
Consider the fact that business networking extends beyond the initial encounter. If your name was Solid Partner, when you first met someone, did you change your name to Sap, as time progressed?
Let's assume that now that you have total control over your Networking Name, no one can be identified quite like you can. Let's be optimistic that you do not have a common name and when your name is mentioned, it's with the most positive and powerful connotations
